Volumetric powder dispensing portions material by volume, while gravimetric powder dispensing uses weight measurements to control the dose. When choosing a laboratory powder dispenser, the right approach depends on your material, dose requirements and workflow. Neither method is inherently more accurate in every application; each has its advantages and specific sources of error.
Choosing The Right Method
As a general rule, volumetric dosing is well suited to repetitive processes with consistent dose sizes, where speed is important. Gravimetric dosing offers greater flexibility when dose sizes change frequently and dispensing time is less critical.
With XQ Instruments’ volumetric dosers, each dose takes just 3 seconds, independent of dose size. Changing the dose size, however, requires a different dosing disk or head.
Gravimetric dosing allows target weights to be changed at any time. XQ Instruments’ gravimetric mode dispenses incrementally, progressive shots achieve a sufficient resolution. The choice of dosing disk size allows users to balance speed and accuracy.
But which method is more accurate?
Both methods measure a proxy for the actual amount of material. Gravimetric dosing measures weight, while volumetric dosing measures volume. Neither directly measures the quantity of active substance.
Moisture absorption can change a powder’s mass by 20% of the dose mass. An accurately weighed dose may therefore contain a different amount of dry material if its moisture content changes. Weight measurements alone do not establish the amount of active substance, so material conditioning and storage remain important for both dispensing methods.
Volumetric dosing, on the other hand, is affected by changes in bulk density, particle size distribution, and material retention within the dosing mechanism. Consistent material supply and storage as well as equipment design, antistatic materials, surface finish, and vibration all play a role in minimizing these effects.
The right method depends on your process
Ultimately, the objective is not simply to achieve a target weight or volume, but to dispense a consistent amount of material. Material properties, storage conditions, ambient humidity, and process requirements all need to be considered.
